Health Sciences Core

(1st year requirement within the Health Sciences)

Successful students in the healthcare pathway demonstrate a positive attitude, good attendance, the ability to follow directions, and a solid academic foundation in math and science.

The health core consists of three classes that are the foundational courses for all the specialized health career pathways.

The classes are:

INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH SCIENCE

This course introduces the students to the history and culture of healthcare.

This course:

  • covers foundational information for all careers
  • offers the opportunity for CPR and First-Aid Certification.
  • allows students to ear a Technology credit for high school.
  • allows students to earn an articulated credit for Columbus State ¬† ¬†Community College.

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

Students engage in a study of the function and structure of the human body.

This course:

  • places strong emphasis on relationship to the body and body systems.
  • allows students to earn a Science credit for high school.
  • is a foundational course for understanding the diagnosis and treatment of disease process.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

Students engage in the study of the language of health care.

This course:

  • places a strong focus on the Latin and Greek root and the compound words used in healthcare to understand the language used in the work place and in the healthcare industry.
  • allows students to earn an elective credit for high school.
  • allows students to earn an articulated credit for Columbus State Community College.
